It is said that if you try to be Everything to Everyone you will end up being Nothing to No One. This is absolutely accurate for your 30 second self introduction!

Visit a local networking event and observe the effectiveness of the introductions.  Here is what you will notice:

  • Most people are nervous, shy and embarrassed
  • Most people have never practiced their elevator pitch.
  • Many people skip their opportunity.
  • You don’t remember 98% of most elevator speeches.

The first word out of your mouth should not be “I, me, or my”.  Instead, start with a fact, a statistic or a thought-provoking statement. Remember, half of the audience is probably rehearsing their own speech in their heads, the other half are thinking, “Darn,  forgot to mention…”, which means they are not 100% focused on you!

Start with a strong statement to bring the room’s attention to you.

Occasionally there is one person who delivers the perfect message!

  • The perfect Elevator Speech – Speaks to a specific problem.
  • The perfect Elevator Pitch does not waste words and is practiced.
  • The perfect Self Introduction delivers a simple call to action.
  • When done right, people will approach you after the meeting with their business card.
